Maserati GranTurismo MC: passive safety

September 23, 2011

Maserati Factory is based in Modena since 1937, when the Orsi family took over the Factory control and moved it from its original Bologna location. The facility, that now covers more than 40,000 m², was entirely renovated in the late 1990’s becoming one of the most advanced low-volume assembly facilities in the world as well as an historic landmark in the city of Modena. The production lines are extremely modern and technological advanced to provide top quality production standards, as well as to offer more ergonomic assembly processes to Factory workers. The Factory hosts twenty six workstations where all the Quattroporte and GranTurismo lines are built. Clients from all over the world can decide to take delivery of their Maserati at the Factory showroom designed by famed architect Ron Arad.

The load bearing body structure facilitates enhancing the safety of the new Maserati GranTurismo MC. The use of the latest technologies, on the other end, allows optimizing the car weight balance and performance. The structural part of the body is made of steel, the hood and front bumper are in aluminum, while the trunk lid uses the Sheet Molding Compound Technology and helps reducing the vehicle weight.

The Maserati GranTurismo MC features six airbags which system has four individual sensors located in the front and sides of the vehicle as well as on the control unit set near the central console. The Maserati GranTurismo MC implies a new generation of dual stage airbags for the driver and front passenger, which is always protected by airbags which adapt to the passenger’s size and stature.

Both the front and rear seat belts have electronically controlled pretensions and load the most modern limiters on the market. The system communicates with a sensor which is able to evaluate the severity of a collision and optimally inflates the airbags by taking in consideration the status of the seat belts (fastened / unfastened). An inertial switch is designed instead to stop the fuel pumps and help preventing fire breaking out in case of a violent collision.

In terms of active safety, the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is available on all Maserati models and it can be activated simply by pushing the electric button located in the central tunnel which substitutes the conventional mechanical lever. In extreme situations, the EPB can be used when the car is moving: the system communicates with the Stability Control (MSP) and acts on all four wheels in order to provide rapid braking in case of an emergency condition (deceleration of 0.5g).

Maserati GranTurismo MC: race inspired luxury

September 21, 2011

Maserati has an established tradition in designing and building Italian fine cars, which is a synonymous of striving for perfection in every detail, enabling drivers to experience the thrill of powerful engines and ensuring passengers with comfort and pleasure. Every new Maserati testifies the marque’s rich history and carries unrivalled racing pedigree, luxurious comfort, extraordinary performance and unmistakable style.

The Maserati GranTurismo MC is a road car with authentic racing genes: it carries the unique style, performance, comfort and design of the GranTurismo together with the pure adrenaline of the Maserati Corse sporting heritage. The GranTurismo MC is the most powerful and fastest Maserati production car: it is in fact the first road car in the Maserati range to break the 186 mph barrier. To automotive enthusiasts worldwide, Maserati Corse is also a synonymous with competition, constant development and lasting victory. It is once again the heritage of Italian craftsmanship and attention to details as well as technology tested on the track for exceptional, accessible performance.

The unique features of Maserati’s newest car are inherited from the GranTurismo range, where luxury and sports are combined to provide unparalleled elegance and performance. The GranTurismo MC takes the GranTurismo S to the next level symbolizing the epitome of the modern grand tourer. The GranTurismo MC is the perfect solution to the combined demands of aerodynamics and performance while its interior perfectly weds the ultimate aesthetics of luxury and style.

New Bodywork Styling.
The streamlined styling of the Maserati GranTurismo MC express craftsmanship and high performance and it is directly inspired by the Maserati Racing Department. Maserati racing experiences contributein fact to develop an aerodynamic body with 25% more front down force and 50% more in the rear than the GranTurismo S at 124 mph. In particular, the front spoiler, skirts and slots in the front fenders push the front of the car down at higher speeds, to cool the brakes as well as deliver down force over the entire car. The GranTurismo MC’s highly sophisticated aerodynamic includes two slots on the hood to cool the engine compartment. The rear bumper has been redesigned to feature centrally located exhausts and it is combined with the diffuser profile to more efficiently promote air flow under the body. These apertures further stabilize the air flow behind the car to improve aerodynamic efficiency, while the rear spoiler produces additional down force at higher speeds. The GranTurismo MC’s 20” flow-formed rims are lighter and bear the renowned Trident symbol on the double spokes.

Maserati GranTurismo MC: a custom made masterpiece

September 19, 2011

Maserati GranTurismo MC features the six-speed automatic transmission powered by ZF, the German company that sets the industry standards. In Sport mode the MC auto-shift programming is activated to execute a perfect blip of the throttle on downshifts and to hold each gear at the red line on acceleration until the driver selects the next one. The acceleration mapping has been improved for even better throttle response. A new MC Start Strategy has been introduced as well for optimal standing start acceleration.

Maserati has paid special attention to optimizing weight distribution for better handling and performances. Maserati engineers have achieved this objective by paying particular attention to details; including the special 20” MC designed alloy rims for a more aggressive look and lower weight.

In the Maserati GranTurismo MC, a 10 mm lower setup has been developed to achieve optimal handling and driving pleasure. The car’s standard single-rate dampers are stiffer and the roll bars have a larger diameter which minimize lateral load shifts (roll angle: -20%). Overall the vehicle’s rigidity is increased by 16% in the front and 32% in the rear. The new setup is combined with a special MSP (Maserati Stability Program) calibration, which gives the driver the best freedom and handling. Maserati’s acclaimed Skyhook adaptive suspension is available as an option.

Designed for the road but developed through the racing department, the Maserati GranTurismo MC has an intense, unmistakable sound that has been achieved thanks to a perfect match between the exhaust and to the use of lighter rear silencers. The exhaust is also equipped with a hinged silencer bypass valve to further enhance the GranTurismo MC sportiness. The valve is permanently open in the Sport mode. Just as on the GT4 and MC Trofeo, the Maserati GranTurismo MC exhausts are higher and more centrally located to further emphasize the vehicle sharper character.

The GranTurismo MC is equipped with the latest generation of performance tires (255/35 ZR 20 front and 295/35 ZR 29 rear) developed by Pirelli, the company who also build the tires for the GranTurismo MC Trofeo. Designed for optimal performance on road and track, the 20” Pirelli Zero Corsa tires are slightly wider than those provided as standard on the GranTurismo S and are aimed to offer increased grip without compromising handling and comfort. Thanks to their design and racing materials specifically designed by Pirelli, they guarantee unbeatable grip and response together with improved precision and constant efficiency even on the track.
