Maserati GranTurismo Convertible: Body, Suspension & Braking System

April 26, 2011

The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible body structure is primarily comprised of high-strength steel, with the hood and bumper reinforcements in aluminum. The rear deck lid is produced from a thermoset plastic material which reduces the weight and it is more resistant to minor damage than other materials commonly employed. The new body is the results of many computer simulations and testing. The stiffness of the new body has set a new industry benchmark by boasting a torsional rigidity frequency of 27.2 Hz which is an indication of how resistant the overall structure is to twisting under load. The vehicle strength contributes to its precise handling and it is the basis of the GranTurismo Convertible overall dynamic performance. The Convertible is a mere 221 lbs heavier than the GranTurismo coupe, allowing the vehicle to deliver the very same exceptional driving performance found in the Maserati coupe.

The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible features aluminum gas shock absorbers equipped with the Skyhook Damping System which automatically selects the best damping rate to suit the dynamic conditions, improving the absorption of road irregularities while delivering the highest level of comfort. The Skyhook system utilizes acceleration sensors which measure the movement of each wheel and the car body to then interpreting the driving and road surface conditions in order to adjust immediately the damper setting. The driver is still in control of the car’s dynamics, which can be set to their own driving style via normal and sports mode. Normal mode is characterized by softer damping for the greatest comfort, while the Sport mode is more controlled with reduced roll and load transfer.

The dynamic performance of the Maserati GranTurismo Convertible is granted by the Maserati Stability Program (MSP), especially developed to optimize driving dynamics and help improve safety. The system is based on a set of sensors which measures any deviations from the car’s ideal dynamic behavior and acts on both the brakes and engine performance to help regain directional stability.

The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible features high performance braking system employing dual-cast technology for the front brakes, a system developed in collaboration with Brembo. The disk’s external braking surface is made in cast iron, while the hub is in aluminum. This solution combines the benefits of a larger disc for greater braking and cast iron’s excellent performance at high temperatures while reducing the weight thanks to the employ of light aluminum.

Maserati GranTurismo Convertible: finally a true four-seat convertible GT

April 12, 2011

The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible makes travel a pure delight for an everyday enjoyment and usability. The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible is the first model of its type for the Trident car company and it is called Grancabrio in all the Countries except for the United States. It is in fact the first convertible designed in the Maserati headquarters having four comfortable seats without compromising the unique handling, driving performance and comfort typical of the Maserati fleet. The GranTurismo Convertible rear passenger compartment is ideally suited to seat two adults in complete comfort. Passengers can immediately feel the attention to details inside the vehicle cabin: from the automatic illumination to the large and comfortable seats in leather, from the storage compartment to the 22° rear seatback angle that gives rear passengers a very comfortable posture not found in most convertible which commonly features upright seat backs.

The GranTurismo Convertible roof has been designed for all-season functionality and it is composed of five steel and aluminum frames which firmly support soft top up to the top speed of 176 mph. The three layers top helps isolating the passenger compartment from the exterior weather and noise while providing the Maserati comfortable on board environment. An integrated, tempered thermal glass rear window makes the car just as drivable under all weather conditions. The durability of the Maserati GranTurismo Convertible soft top system has been proven in a battery of stringent tests exposing the roof to the world’s most challenging weather conditions. The result is a roof composed of a triple-layer fabric available in six standard colors in order to satisfy even the most demanding clients. Roof colors selection includes black, blue, burgundy, chocolate, titanium and java – a type of classic beige, whether the exterior roof colors are complemented by three headliners available in black, beige and beluga grey.

The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible can be fully enjoyed during the warmest days of the year with top down. The top can be opened from the inside and also from the outside thru the driver’s door lock: by inserting the key and turning it clockwise for more than two seconds the top starts to rise up and fold away. This system allows closing the top, simply by turning the key counterclockwise. If inclement weather occurs while driving, the driver simply needs to slow down to 20 mph and hold the close button for few seconds and all passengers will be quickly protected from the bad weather by the fully isolated fabric of the soft top.
