Maserati GranTurismo Sport: Engine, Technology and safety

May 10, 2012

Maserati has recently launched the GranTurismo Sport, its new two door coupe with increased performance and elegant sporty restyling. The new Maserati GranTurismo Sport’s engine is sporty and responds immediately when pushing the accelerator pedal. The engine is in fact flexible enough to modify its responses based on current conditions: well-behaved in urban settings to dynamic and powerful on the open road. If the driver selects the ‘Sport’ button, then the exhaust valves open up, the gear changes and suspensions are calibrated for maximum performance and the engine takes on an aggressive, deep and exciting tone symbolizing Maserati’s competitive heritage and nature.
Driving a Maserati GranTurismo Sport brings you to a whole and different experience. The new Maserati is the result of Maserati engineers tweaking the engine to produce a GranTurismo with an overall balance and driving experience as close to perfection as possible.

The GranTurismo Sport features a six-speed automatic ZF transmission equipped with MC Auto Shift Software. The ZF transmission provides a smoother gear changes without compromising performance and grants an ideal weight distribution of 49% in the front axle and 51% in the rear. The double wishbone suspension on the GranTurismo Sport is controlled by the Sport Skyhook System of the new variable dampers that are constantly adjusting the damping by a new set up. The driving experience becomes even more enjoyable and reactive while improving the comfort levels of all four occupants. The Maserati Stability program (MSP) is alerted when the driver presses the “Sport” button, allowing the Maserati GranTurismo Sport to become more precise and reactive but continuing to absorb bumps in the roads and adapt to any surface conditions.

The new Maserati GranTurismo Sport is equipped with Brembo dual-cast technology brakes teamed with six-piston mono-block calipers in the front and four-piston unit in the rear. The drilled and slotted discs are crafted from cast iron and aluminum allowing to decrease the weight by 20%, to provide a more comfortable ride and to reduce overall wear and corrosion. The BluOpaco caliper palette is a new tint for both, Brembo and Maserati.

In developing the GranTurismo Sport, active and passive safety was at the forefront of Maserati engineers, resulting in a vehicle employing the very latest safety technology available in the motoring field. The Maserati Stability Program (MSP) gives the car a complete stability: the system works with the ASR traction control and ABS to stop the wheels locking under braking together with the hydraulic braking assistance (HBA).

Maserati Quattroporte: Technology, Transmission, Chassis and suspension

April 11, 2012

The Maserati Quattroporte gives the Trident luxury sport sedan thrilling performance and superior comfort.

The eight-cylinder 4,244 cc 90V° engine delivers its power in a specially designed way to provide the maximum on-board comfort and smooth gear changes without scarifying superior performance typical of each Maserati model. The torque curve reaches its peak at 339 lb-ft at 4,750 rpm whether the Quattroporte performance is among the best in the luxury sedan category reaching 405 bhp power output, 0-60 mph acceleration of 5.5 seconds and top speed of 164 mph.

The 4.2 liter engine along with the gearbox management proves fluidity and smooth gearshifts without compromising power or speed. The ZF German transmission delivers smoothness at low to mid revs but it also brings cutting edge performance with gear changes right up to the 7,200 rpm redline. The driver can modify the transmission response to match his/her own driving style and to best suit the road conditions simply by pressing the Low Grip or Sport buttons. Low Grip is best when the road surface is icy or slick. Selecting the Sport button, the driver makes the transmission more aggressive and the emphasis is placed on performance with faster changes at higher revs. For an even sportier drive, the Maserati Quattroporte can be driven in manual mode by moving the shift lever located on the center tunnel to the left similar to what happen in sequentially shifted race cars. Just like in a Maserati race car, the paddles are located in the steering column, with the left paddle for downshift and the right paddles for upshifts. The Sport setting can be used in automatic or manual shifting modes, with the manual/sport combination providing the most engaging driving experience.

The Maserati Quattroporte chassis allows a thrilling drive while providing superior levels of comfort and safety. The car’s torsional stiffness results in a balanced handling while enhancing the driving experience. With its forged aluminum arms and hubs, the Quattroporte’s front and rear double wishbone suspension features ‘anti-dive’ and ‘anti-squad’ geometry to prevent the front end dipping under braking and the rear end squatting under acceleration. The suspension can be further upgraded with the optional Skyhook suspension system to controls the shock damping in response to driver input to the car as well as road conditions.

The optional Skyhook electronically controlled suspension system provides automatic and regular damping adjustment and allow the driver to maintain maximum comfort level on board while adapting to his/her driving style. There are two different settings in the Skyhook suspension system: normal and sport. The ride is softer and more comfortable in normal mode whereas the driver can switch to Sport mode at any time to enhance the Quattroporte’s sporty nature and performance.

The Quattroporte S engine is extremely reliable and quiet thanks also to its reduced friction, which ultimately means lower fuel consumption and better refilling of the cylinders.

The Maserati Quattroporte S automatic transmission provides fluidity and smooth gearshifts without compromising power or speed. The gearbox management software was coincided to optimize gear pick up as well as to make the driver aware of when the automatic transmission is changing gear. The hydraulic torque converter in the Maserati ZF gearbox provides a boost at low-mid revs and ensures sufficient power right up to 7,200 rpm. By selecting the Low Grip or Sport buttons, Maserati drivers can modify the transmission setting to better suit road conditions or match their individual driving style. Maserati GranTurismo MC on the podium for Robb Report 2012 Car of the Year

March 13, 2012

The new Maserati GranTurismo MC is on the podium in the recent Robb Report’s 19th annual “Car of the Year”. Second only to the Lamborghini Aventador (with a MRSP of $387,000), the Maserati MC topped a significant list of competitors from across the industry including: Aston Martin VirageVolante, Bentley Continental GTC, Audi A7, Jaguar XKR-S, Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Roadster and CLS 63 AMG, BMW 650i Convertible, among others.

The most significant quote of the article is the following: “The MC might have topped the Aventador if bonus points were awarded for sales, because more judges expressed interest in purchasing this car than any other at the contest.”

The Maserati GranTurismo MC is a milder and more road-oriented version of the company’s track-ready models and can comfortably accommodate four passengers. Yet is also the most powerful and lightest of the current Maserati in production, the quickest from all the times. It is also the first road car in the Maserati fleet to break the 186 mph barrier. The GranTurismo MC’s 6-speed paddle-shifted gearbox is smooth; transmission is superb and provides a classy, sport and a great everyday drive. Everything in the Maserati GranTurismo MC reminds its authentic racing genes inherited from Maserati Corse, the Trident Racing Department.

As Robb Report quoted “the acclaim stirred by the GranTurismo MC underscored our judges’ appreciation for automobiles with attributes other than brute power or singularity of purpose. This car offers poise and balance. The front/mid-mounted V8’s positioning in the chassis makes the MC a handling delight, and the high-revving engine compensates for any lack of horsepower with immediate response”. Robert Ross from Robb Report then continues: “Essentially a GranTurismo S with stylish and aerodynamic accoutrements, this Maserati is a big GT that belies its bulk with a sporting but supple ride. The car’s size benefits the cabin, where rear passengers are rewarded with real seats – a novelty GT car. The MC’s stunning good looks seduced our judges, as did its exhaust note, which is as musical as it is unabashedly obstreperous, especially when the car is set in Sport mode.”

North America Premiere for Maserati Kubang, the new company SUV concept

February 15, 2012

Maserati officially unveiled the latest Maserati Kubang sport luxury SUV concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show that was recently held in Detroit. With the Kubang concept, the Trident marque aims to enhance the strengths and the modern lines of Maserati which aims to offer an Italian alternative to one of the most competitive segments in the market. Maserati aims to build the future sport luxury SUX in North America, which represents a relevant step in the future of the Maserati product range.

While the Maserati SUV Kubang concept creates discontinuity by having the Trident marquee entering a new segment, it still represents continuity with Maserati heritage and DNA’s integrity. The Italian manufacturer based in Modena unveiled this concept for the first time at the NAIAS in 2003. Nowadays, the synergy within the Fiat-Chrysler industrial group offers Maserati an ideal catalyst for its own sport luxury SUV interpretation. The model eventually produced will be unmistakably and unquestionably a Maserati: all major system components will be 100% Maserati in continuity with the brand values of sportiness, performance, elegance, luxury and craftsmanship. The essence of the Maserati Kubang SUV concept that makes it immediately recognizable as a true Trident vehicle has been directly created by the Maserati Style Center headed by Lorenzo Ramaciotti.

A new generation of Maserati engines has been designed at the Maserati Headquarter in Modena, under the direction of Paolo Martinelli, Head of Maserati Powertrain Development. Before undertaking this role at Maserati, Martinelli worked at the Ferrari Factory for almost thirty years, as the Head of the Engine Department for the Formula One Team at the era of Michael Schumacher’s World Championships. The production of the new Maserati engines will be done at the Ferrari Factory in Maranello, Italy where they will be mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Components featuring specific performance settings such as brakes, suspensions, steering and electronics will be exclusively developed by Maserati engineers at the headquarter located in Modena, Italy.

Maserati arrived at the 2012 North America International Auto Show in Detroit just few days after announcing the closure of a very positive year, where sales were up 10% in 2011 compared to 2010. North America is still the leading market for the Trident marque with 2,465 units delivered to Maserati customers in the last twelve months, which ultimately represents a 21% increase over 2010.

Maserati MC: race inspired luxury

February 13, 2012

The new GranTurismo MC is the pinnacle of the Maserati range and represents the ultimate quintessence of the Trident marque heritage in creating road and track cars for nearly over a century. The new Maserati GranTurismo MC is a road car with authentic racing DNA, a unique car with the GranTurismo inimitable style, performance and comfort which also embraces the heritage of Maserati Corse, the Trident racing department. With a limited production of only 250 GranTurismo MC for the North America market for model year 2012, this top performance Maserati is exclusively made for strictly selected car aficionados.

Maserati has embraced a strong racing and competition heritage since its foundation in 1914 and the acclaimed Maserati MC12 dominated the International GT Racing from 2005 to 2010. MC stands for Maserati Corse, and occasionally the Trident Marque develop a road car with such a strong racing influence such as for the new Maserati MC.

The new Maserati MC is currently the most sporting car in the Maserati line, whether you consider it as an homage to the Maserati racing achievements or a “more civilized” version of the GranTurismo MCTrofeo.

The 4.7 liter V8 Maserati MC is the most powerful and fastest production car in the entire Maserati history. Its engine encompassed numerous revisions compared to its predecessors in order to reduce friction and consequently improves power and efficiency. Enhancements such as the introduction of the super hard but slippery Diamond Like Coating (DLC) on the camshafts and tappets allowed to reach a maximum 444 HP power with peak torque swelling to 376 lb-ft together with a 6% improvements in fuel economy efficiency. The six-speed automatic transmission includes the MC Auto-shift: when the Sport mode is selected, the gear is hold all the way to the red line, shifts are faster and a double-declutch throttle “blip” is added on down-changes. The GranTurismo MC has a top speed of 185 mph and can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in an effortless 4.8 seconds. The car has better handling: suspension is by single-rate coil springs over performance dampers with front and rear double wishbones. The Skyhook electronic adaptive suspension is also available as an option.

The MC exterior contributes in conveying the car sportier character: the aggressive noise is more boldly shaped and sculpted air intakes are added to cool the Brembo brakes. The hood has two vents aiming to extract hot air from the engine bay, hence the rear diffuser features two exhaust pipes centrally mounted. The GranTurismo MC has dark trim instead of chrome one as well as new MC Designed 20” wheels.
